Yes, they are so adorable and cute when they are babies. Yes, they are companions but remember Marmosets are wild animals. Consider the following before you purchase a marmoset.
Marmosets are wild animals and it’s impossible to offer them the same complexity of their wild environment in captivity.
Marmosets are not domesticated animals, like dogs or cats. They have not been selectively bred to live closely with humans. Breeders don’t breed Marmoset with their well being in mind but rather profit
Marmosets have very particular requirements. The larger the enclosure the happier the monkey. The correct diet is imperative to ensure the monkeys are healthy. Enrichment materials are essential for happy monkeys.
Marmosets are extremely expensive, time-consuming, and it is difficult to meet their needs. Veterinary bills can be extremely high if these monkeys are not housed, feed and enriched correctly.
Marmosets have large brains in comparison to their body size. They are intelligent and we have a responsibility to ensure that monkeys are treated correctly.
Marmosets can get bored easily when not provided with challenges, tasks, and new objects to investigate. This will lead to physical and mental issues Providing Marmosets with the right activities to keep them busy takes a great deal of commitment.
Marmosets are highly social animals. They need the companionship of other marmosets. Keeping a single Marmoset is not ideal and will lead to complications
When marmosets grow older, they may fight with other group members as they do not have the choice to leave the group. Alternative arrangements have to be made to house these Marmosets costing more time and money.
It is extremely expensive to look after marmosets well in captivity. In many countries, the climate is too cold for marmosets, 24 hours heating is necessary. Veterinary costs are also likely to be very high as well. Providing a varied diet can also be pricey.
Marmosets have a long lifespan and can live for up to 18 years in captivity for all. They like children needing attention for their entire life.
Although marmosets are very cute, they will bite from time to time and sometimes for no reason. These bites can be quite drastic, tearing flesh and producing a wound.
As a Marmoset age, they will show very different behavior and acceptance of people. They can become quite aggressive and this is difficult to handle without the right knowledge.
At EMT we don’t encourage Marmosets as pets.
